78' Higgins Motor Torpedo Boat:

  • Laid down 23 November 1943 by Higgins Industries, New Orleans, LA
  • Launched 22 January 1944
  • Completed 24 April 1944, placed in service and assigned to Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron THIRTY ONE (PTRon 31) under the command of Lt. John M. Searles, USNR
  • PTRon 31, assigned to Pacific Fleet, had action at Treasury Island in the Solomons during October and November 1944; at Palau, in the Marianas, during the period December 1944 to February 1945, and at Okinawa during the
    period June to August 1945. The squadron also based for a time in San Pedro Bay, in the Philippines, but had no action from this base
  • The "8 Ball" was placed out of service 17 December 1945
  • Struck from the Naval Register 8 January 1946
  • Transferred to the State Department, Foreign Liquidation Commission in May 1946 and sold
  • Fate unknown.
