Tacoma Class Patrol Frigate/British Colony Class Frigate:

  • (MC Type T. S2-S2-AQ1) Originally authorized as Patrol Gunboat, PG-200
  • Reclassified as Patrol Frigate, PF-92, 15 April 1943
  • Laid down 20 October 1943 under a Maritime Commission contract at Walsh-Kaiser Co., Inc., Providence, RI
  • Assigned to the Royal Navy under the Lend-Lease Program and named Prowse
  • Launched 21 November 1943
  • Transferred to the Royal Navy and commissioned HMS Zanzibar (K-596), 21 June 1944
  • Returned to U.S. custody 21 May 1946 at Brooklyn, NY
  • Struck from the Naval Register 29 October 1946
  • Sold for scrap 17 June 1947.

    A former British protectorate located off the east coast of Africa and comprised of Zanzibar and Pemba Islands. It became a sultanate on 10 December 1963 and attained independence on 12 January 1964, uniting with Tanganyika the same year to form Tanzania
