Callao served the Navies of Spain and the United States

Gunboat:

  • The first Callao was laid down in March 1887 as Callao for the Spanish Navy by the Manila Ship Co., Cavite, Philippines
  • Launched in June 1888
  • Captured 12 May 1898 in Manila Bay, Philippines
  • Commissioned USS Callao 31 July 1898
  • Decommissioned 21 February 1901 at Cavite
  • Recommissioned 20 December 1902
  • Decommissioned 31 January 1916 at Hong Kong, BCC and laid up at Olongapo, Luzon, Philippines
  • Designated PG-37, 17 July 1920
  • Reclassified as a Ferry Boat, YFB-11, 21 June 1921
  • Sold at Manila 13 September 1923
  • Fate unknown.

  • Draft 6' 6"
  • Speed 10 kts.

  • Armament: Four 3-pounder rifles and two 1-pounder rifles, changed to one 6-pounder and three 3-pounders
    1905 - One 6-pounder, three 3-pounders, two 1-pounders and one Colt machine gun
    1911 - Four 3-pounder rapid fire mounts and two 1-pounder rapid fire mounts
    1914 - Four 3-pounder rapid fire mounts
  • Propulsion: One single ended Scotch boiler, two 250ihp vertical compound engine, two shafts.
