Maratanza


Gunboat:

  • The first Maratanza was built in 1861 at the Boston Navy Yard
  • Launched 26 November 1861
  • Commissioned USS Maratanza 12 April 1862 at Boston, MA
  • Decommissioned 21 June 1865 at Portsmouth Navy Yard, Portsmouth, NH
  • Sold in August 1868 to A. B. and C. W. Lewis
  • She subsequently served as a Haitian gunboat under the names Salnave and Union
  • Fate unknown.

    Specifications:

  • Displacement 786 t.
  • Length 209'
  • Beam 32'
  • Draft 9' 6"
  • Speed 10 kts.
  • Armament: One 100-pounder, one 9" Dahlgren smoothbore and four 24 pounders
  • Propulsion: Steam, side wheeler.
