Ashuelot


Ashuelot Class Gunboat:

  • Laid down in 1864 by Donald McKay Shipyard, East Boston, MA
  • Launched 22 July 1865
  • Delivered to the Boston Navy Yard 30 November 1865
  • Commissioned 4 April 1866
  • Struck a rock off East Lamock Island, China on 18 February 1883 and suffered such severe damage that she was abandoned and sank in 47 minutes.

    Specifications:

  • Displacement 1,370 t.
  • Length 255'
  • Beam 35'
  • Draft 9'
  • Speed 8 kts.
  • Armament: Four 8" Dahlgren smooth bore, two 60-pounder Parrott rifles, two 24-pounder howitzers and two 20-pounder Parrott rifles
  • Propulsion: Two horizontal tublar boilers, one inclined direct-acting steam engine, side wheeler.
