Enquirer served the U.S. Navy and the Army


Patrol Yacht/Survey Steamer:

  • Built in 1896 as the yacht Enquirer by Union Drydock Company, Buffalo, NY for newspaper publisher William James Conners of Buffalo
  • Purchased by the Navy 28 May 1898 for use in the Spanish-American War
  • Commissioned USS Enquirer 22 June 1898
  • Decommissioned 9 August 1898
  • Sold to the War Department 20 July 1899
  • Assigned to the Engineer Corps 28 August 1899 and renamed USED Search
  • Employed in the Detroit District conducting river and harbor improvements and surveys in the North and Northwest Lakes
  • Served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers until 1929
  • Registered in 1939 to Loretta Gorsuch as the freighter Enquirer home ported at Detroit, MI
  • Removed from documentation in 1941
  • Scrapped between 1942/1943 at Port Clinton, OH.
