Andradite served both the U. S. Navy and the Coast & Geodetic Survey


Coastal Patrol Yacht:

  • Built in 1927 as the yacht Comoco by Defoe Boat and Motor Works, Bay City, Michigan for James E. Whitin of North Ukbridge, MA
  • Renamed Caronia
  • Sold in 1934 to George L. Machris of Los Angeles, CA
  • Acquired by the Navy in 1942, transferred to the Coast and Geodetic Survey and commissioned USC&GS Guide
  • Did small amount of survey work in San Francisco Bay area prior to return to Navy
  • Returned to the Navy 16 March 1942
  • Commissioned USS Andradite (PYc-11), 18 April 1942
  • Decommissioned 19 December 1945
  • Struck from the Naval Register 8 January 1946
  • Transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal 22 June 1947 to serve with the Coast and Geodetic Service and renamed Caronia
    Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 lists transfer to the War Shipping Administration as February 1947
  • Sold in 1952 to the North Coast Timber Corp. of San Francisco, CA
  • Burned at Canton Island (Phoenix Group), Pacific Ocean, 11 July 1956 at position 2° 15' S. Latitude, 171° 43' W. Longitude.

  • Beam 23' 6"
  • Draft 9' 4"
  • Speed 11.7 kts.
  • Complement 56
  • Armament: One 3"/23 gun mount
  • Propulsion: Two 600shp Cooper Bessemer 8-G X-6M R diesel engines, two shafts.
