Coastal Patrol Yacht:

  • The first Leader was built 1927 as the yacht Curlew by White and Co., Ltd., Southampton, England
  • Acquired by the Navy and commissioned USS Leader (PYc-42), 24 October 1942
  • Decommissioned 11 May 1945
  • Transferred to the War Shipping Administration 4 September 1946
  • Sold in 1949 to Kenneth E. Wilson of Los Angeles, CA and renamed Chito
  • She was purchased by Mr. Wilson for General Abelardo L. Rodriguez, former President of Mexico, as there were restrictions on foreigners buying excessive materials from the United States
  • Acquired by Jack Hyde of San Diego, CA and renamed Hyding
  • Resold to C. Arnholt Smith of San Diego, CA
  • Acquired by Warren St. Thomas of Hollywood, CA
  • Sold to Mr. Assel Offe
  • Sold in the 1960s to Jack Ford, and was used as a charter yacht taking groups to the Northwest and Alaska
  • During a storm she lost both engines and was towed to Sausalito, CA where she remained until purchased by John Mullen
  • Sold in 1979 to Paul Whitter, renamed Paullu and restored in 1979 by the Paul Whittier family at Fulton Shipyard, Antioch, CA
  • Sold in 1993 to Henk Koster and Suzanne Wasmer of Rotterdam, The Netherlands and renamed Grace
  • She is now based near Oslo, Norway.

  • Displacement 230 t.
  • Length 117'
  • Beam 19' 6"
  • Draft 7' 3"
  • Speed 13 kts.
  • Complement 25
  • Armament: Two 20mm guns, two depth charge tracks, and two rocket launchers
  • Propulsion: Two Krupp air injection diesel engines (1927), Replaced by two 275shp Cooper-Bessemer F P-6 diesel engines (1939) and finally two Caterpillar 360 HK diesel engines in 1962, two shafts.
