SC-497 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down 25 August 1941 by the Quincy Adams Yacht Yard, Quincy, MA
  • Launched 15 April 1942
  • Commissioned USS PC-628, 29 April 1942
  • Reclassified SC-628 in April 1943
  • Reclassified as a Control Submarine Chaser, SCC-628, 20 August 1945
  • Struck from the Naval Register 20 March 1946
  • Transferred to the Maritime Commsission 6 May 1947
  • Acquired in 1957 by Sea Service Co., Inc. of Houston, TX and named S.S.C. III
  • Acquired in 1957 by Carl M. Zoll of Metairie, LA for use a a fishing boat and renamed Indian Prince
  • Sunk 22 January 1958, in a collision with The Netherlands vessel Bonita at Mile 20.5 on the Misssippi River.

    Specifications:

  • Displacement 148 t.
  • Length 110' 10"
  • Beam 17'
  • Draft 6' 6"
  • Speed 15.6 kts.
  • Complement 28
  • Armament: One 40mm mount, two .50 cal. machine guns, two depth charge projector "Y Guns," and two depth charge tracks
  • Propulsion: Two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts.
