SC-497 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down 18 July 1942 as PC-1009 by Fellows and Stewart, Wilmington, CA
  • Launched 25 November 1942
  • Reclassified SC-1009 in April 1943
  • Commissioned USS SC-1009, 25 June 1943 under the command of ENS John A. Cranshaw, USNR
  • Decommissioned in November 1945
  • Transferred to the Coast Guard 3 December 1945 and commissioned USCGC Air Pelican (WAVR 446)
  • Struck from the Naval Register 3 January 1946
  • Sold 26 January 1948
  • Acquired in 1954 by Claude Kelso of Seattle, WA for use as a fishing boat and renamed Pelican
  • Acquired in 1956 by the Pelican Boat Co. of Seattle
  • Foundered 15 November 1962 at Half Moon Bay, CA.

  • Length 110' 10"
  • Beam 17'
  • Draft 6' 6"
  • Speed 21 kts.
  • Complement 28
  • Armament: One 40mm gun mount, two .50 cal. machine guns, two depth charge projector "Y Guns," and two depth charge tracks
  • Propulsion: Two 1,540bhp General Motors (Electro-Motive Div.) 16-184A diesel engines, two shafts.
