SC-1022 served both the U. S. Navy and Coast Guard

SC-497 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down 18 September 1942 as PC-1022 by the Luders Marine Construction Co., Stamford, CT
  • Launched 23 March 1943
  • Reclassified SC-1022 in April 1943
  • Commissioned USS SC-1022, 9 June 1943 under the command of LTJG Philip L. McHugh, USNR
  • Decommissioned in October 1945
  • Transferred to the Coast Guard 9 October 1945 and commissioned USCGC Air Piper (WAVR 452)
  • Decommissioned and sold 26 September 1947
  • Acquired in 1948 by Marine Associates, Inc. of Beaufort, NC for use as a fishing boat
  • Renamed Evelyn L. Willis in 1949
  • Acquired in 1951 by Tuna, Inc. of Moss Point, MS
  • Acquired in 1954 by Cecil W. Drake of Moss Point
  • Acquired in 1956 by Pampo Boats, Inc. of Sabine Pass, TX
  • Acquired in 1959 by the Texas Menhaden Co. of Sabine Pass
  • Scrapped in 1967.

  • Displacement 105 t.
  • Length 110' 10"
  • Beam 17'
  • Draft 6' 6"
  • Speed 21 kts.
  • Complement 28
  • Armament: One 40mm gun mount, two .50 cal. machine guns, two depth charge projector "Y Guns," and eight depth charge racks
  • Propulsion: Two 1,540bhp General Motors (Electro-Motive Div.) 16-184A diesel engines, two shafts.
