SC-1068 served both the U. S. Navy and Coast Guard.


SC-497 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down 10 December 1942 as PC-1068 by the Mathis Yacht Building Co. (renamed John Trumpy and Sons), Camden, NJ
  • Launched 26 March 1943
  • Reclassified and commissioned USS SC-1068, 13 April 1943
  • Decommissioned 28 February 1946, transferred to the Coast Guard and commissioned USCGC Air Snipe (WAVR 465) the same day
  • Struck from the Naval Register 12 March 1946
  • Sold 27 January 1948 to the Boyer Towing Co. of Ketchikan, AK and converted to a towing vessel
  • Acquired in 1953 by James M. Hawthorne of Juneau, AK and renamed Air-Snipe
  • Acquired in 1958 by Albert Halvorsen of Ketchikan, AK
  • Acquired in 1959 by Boyer Towing Co., Inc. of Ketchikan for use as a tugboat
  • Fate unknown.

  • Beam 17'
  • Draft 6' 6" (fl)
  • Speed 21 kts.
  • Complement 28
  • Armament: One 40mm gun mount, one/two twin mount .50 cal. machine guns, two/three depth charge projector "K Guns", 14 depth charges with six single release chocks and two sets Mk 20 Mousetrap
    rails with four 7.2 projectiles
  • Propulsion: Two 1,540bhp General Motors (Electro-Motive Div.) 16-184A diesel engines, two shafts.
