SC-497 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down 7 September 1942 as PC-1299 by Perkins and Vaughan, Inc., Wickford, RI
  • Reclassified and launched SC-1299, 10 April 1943
  • Commissioned USS SC-1299, 1 June 1943 and assigned to the Caribbean Sea Frontier
  • Picked up 18 survivors on 8 July 1944 from the American tanker Esso Harrisburg that was torpedoed and sunk the previous day by the German submarine U-516 about 200 miles northwest of Aruba,
    Netherlands Antilles, at position 13° 26' N, 72° 11' W
  • Struck from the Naval Register 25 February 1946
  • Transferred to the Maritime Commission 12 August 1946
  • Fate unknown.

  • Length 110' 10"
  • Beam 17'
  • Draft 6' 6"
  • Speed 15.6 kts.
  • Complement 28
  • Armament: One 40mm mount, two .50 cal. machine guns, two depth charge projector "K Guns," two sets Mk 20 Mousetrap rails with four 7.2 projectiles and two depth charge tracks
  • Propulsion: Two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts.
