Whippet (SP 89)


Motorboat:

  • The first Whippet was built in 1917 by the Greenpoint Basin and Construction Co., Greenpoint, Long Island, NY
  • Acquired by the Navy 9 July 1917
  • Commissioned 24 July 1917
  • Decommissioned 11 January 1919, struck from the Navy list and returned to her owner
  • Fate unknown.

    Specifications:

  • Displacement 21 t.
  • Length 72'
  • Beam 12'
  • Draft 2' 4½"
  • Speed 23 kts.
  • Complement 11
  • Armament: One 1-pounder and one machine gun
  • Propulsion: Two 150hp 6-cylinder Sterling gasoline engines, two shafts.
