    Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships: Rod was built during 1907 by Jacobson & Peterson, Brooklyn, N.Y., as a wooden coal barge and chartered briefly by the U.S. Navy during 1918 from her owner, Moran Towing & Transportation Co., of New York.
