Fern served the U. S. Lighthouse Service, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army


Lighthouse Tender:

  • The third Fern was built in 1915 by Hall Brothers Shipbuilding Co., Winslow, WA for the Lighthouse Service
  • Commissioned USLHT Fern 25 June 1915 and based at Ketchikan, AK
  • Acquired by the Navy 4 September 1917 and placed in service the same day
  • Returned to the Lighthouse Service by Executive Order dated 1 July 1919
  • Decommissioned in 1934 and sold
  • Her new owner put her into service as a freight boat based at Seward, AK
  • Transferred to the Army 19 September 1934 and renamed USED S. D. Mason (FS 551)
  • Fate unknown.
