USCAC Poe

  • Built in 1898 as the freighter Eugene Grasselli by John Dialogue & Son, Camden N.J. for the Grasselli Chemical Co.
  • Launched in 1898
  • Acquired by the U.S. Army Quartermasters Corp in 1899,
  • Assigned to the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps
  • Christened, commissioned and placed in service as U.S. Coast Artillery Corps transport USCAC Poe 1899
  • Poe provided passenger and freight service for the U. S. Army Coast Artillery from about 1899 to the early 1920s
  • She served primarily at Fort Barrancas, Pensacola, FL. but also served at Fort Morgan, AL. on Mobile Bay, and for a short time the forts at Galveston, TX.
  • In 1916 the Poe was assigned to the forts in the Panama Canal Zone and served there into the early 1920s.
  • Decommissioned and retired from U.S. Army service, circa early 1920s
