Cargo Ship :
  • Laid down in 1919 as SS San Pablo at Workman, Clark & Co., Belfast, Northern Ireland
  • Launched in 1919
  • Delivered in 1919 to the Balboa Shipping Co. flagged Panama, leased to United Fruit Co.
  • Acquired by the War Shipping Administration, 16 May 1942, from Balboa Shipping Co.
  • Operated by United Fruit Co. on a time charter from 16 May 1942 to 2 July 1942
  • Torpedoed and sunk, 3 July 1942, U-161 fired two torpedoes at SS San Pablo while the ship was working cargo at Puerto Limón, Costa Rica. San Pablo hit amidships and near the bridge in #1 and #2 holds and quickly settled to the bottom with only her superstructure above the water. One crew member died and 23 stevedores (residents of Puerto Limón) working in the holds were killed.
  • On 9 January 1943 San Pablo was raised and after temporary repairs on 6 March, taken in tow by the tug Crusader to Tampa, FL., arriving 28 March.
  • Final Disposition, Initial plans called for repairing San Pedro, but she was declared a total loss and sunk as target 9 miles south-southeast of Pensacola Pass, 25 September 1943
