  • Built for the US Army by Shanghai Dock & Engineering Co.
  • Launched at Shanghai, China, in 1914 as USAT Collier No. 1
  • Completion was delayed due to technical problems with the coaling elevators and the grounding of the vessel at Yang-Tse-Poo, China, on 29 July 1915 during a typhoon
  • Accepted by the Quartermaster Department about October 1916
  • Assigned to the Army Transport Service at Manila, P.I.
  • Renamed in honor of Major Hubert L. Wigmore, Corps of Engineers, who was the military attaché to Japan and who died suddenly on 2 September 1913 at Chusenji.
  • Usually moored in Manila harbor and operated by the port Quartermaster for the purposes of coaling U.S. Army transports and other government vessels as required
  • The loading capacity of Wigmore was 6,000 tons of coal per day
  • Stationed at the Quartermaster Depot, Manila, P.I.
  • Sold, 25 February 1926, to the Madrigal Co. of Manila

    Namesake
    Hubert Llewellyn Wigmore, born 14 October 1874 San Francisco, US Military Academy Class of 1899. 2nd Lieutenant, 5th Cavalry, in Puerto Rico. Promoted to 1st Lt. 02 Feb 1901, served with 15th Cavalry in Philippines. Transferred to Engineers 18 Jan 1902, Aide de Camp to General Davis in Philippines 1902-1903. Developed coal mines on Batan Island 1903. Mapping expedition in Mexico July 1906-August 1907. Captain Corps of Engineers 17 Sep 1906. Recorder of Board of Engineers and Assistant to Engineer Officer, 2nd New York District, 05 Oct 08-17 Jan 11; commander Company C, 1st Battalion Engineers, Washington Barracks to 13 Apr 12; special duty, Army War College 16 Apr-01 May 12; promoted to Major 27 Feb 13, leave of absence 02-28 May 12; en route to Japan 01 Jun-01 Jul 12; Military Attache, US Embassy, Tokyo, 01 Jun 12-02 Sep 13. Died of appendicitis at his summer college in Chusenji (properly Lake Chuzenji).
