USED Mississippi (I) (1882 - 1919)

Stern-wheel Towboat:
  • Built in 1882, as the towboat Mississippi at Carondelet, MO.
  • Purchased by the Mississippi River Commission before completion
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Completed, date unknown
  • Assigned to the US Army Corps of Engineers for the Mississippi River Commission (MRC) spring and fall inspection trips from St. Louis to New Orleans.
  • Partly burned at Paducah in January 1893
  • Rebuilt at St. Louis in 1893, hull construction shown as steel, then termed a “stern-wheel steamer" indicating that her function as a towboat was secondary to survey duties
  • Taken over by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1906 at St. Louis
  • Transferred the the US Army Corps of Engineers at West Memphis, Arkansas in 1919, renamed USED Piomingo
  • Piomingo was assigned to what is now the Corps of Engineers Memphis District for service as a towboat
  • Decommissioned and retired from Army service, 22 June 1922.
