USED Oriole


Sternwheel Towboat / Snagboat / Dredge:
  • Built in 1908 at Aitken, MN.
  • Launched in 1908
  • Purchased by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1910, at Libby MN.
  • Delivered, christened, commissioned and put into service by the US Army Corps of Engineers as the towboat USED Oriole in 1910
  • Assigned to the US Army Corps of Engineers District, unknown
  • Oriole worked the Mississippi River and Big Sandy Lake
  • Converted to a snagboat in 1914
  • Converted to a bucket dredge in 1916 (dimensions changed to 107 x 22'3" x 5)
  • Retired from Army service in 1918
  • Sold in 1916 to George Matoon, Big Sandy Lake, less machinery, for use as a summer hotel until 1941
  • Final Disposition, pilot house is now in visitors center of the Big Sandy Lock house
