USED Towboat Wynoka


Sternwheel Towboat:
  • Built in 1899 at Dubuque, IA.
  • Launched in 1899
  • Acquired by the Mississippi River Commission in 1899
  • In 1905 she caught on fire and her cabin and pilot house were burned off at O'Donnell's Landing, Arkansas below Cairo
  • Transferred in 1905 to the US Army Engineers St. Louis District
  • Christened, commissioned and and put into service as USED Towboat Wynoka in 1905
  • Wynoka operated on the Mississippi River
  • By 1917 USED Wynoka had been reassigned to US Engineers, Memphis District
  • In April 1925 Wynoka made a trip to St. Paul with five barges loaded with water ballast to test the possibility of an upper Mississippi extension of the Federal Barge Line. At Island 17 the barges went aground and after they were freed the Mississippi River Barge Line Sternwheel Steamer General Ashburn completed the trip.
  • On 4 August 1929 Wynoka hit a rock and sank near the Rock Island Bridge
  • Repaired at Keokuk, she took part in the dedication of the new Peoria Illinois terminal in June 1931
  • Retired from US Army service, circa 1933
  • Sold in 1933 to E.N. Bisso and renamed Bisso
  • Resold in 1935, renamed Gold Shield
  • Final Disposition, sank in late April 1939 at Algiers, LA.
