USED Towboat Chickamauga

Sternwheel Towboat:
  • Built in 1915 by US Army Corps of Engineers Muscle Shoals, AL.
  • Launched in 1915
  • Christened, commissioned and placed in service in 1915 by the U.S. Engineering Department as USED Towboat Chickamauga
  • Assigned to the US Army Corps of Engineers Chattanooga District worked on the Tennessee River until transferred
  • Transferred to US Army Corps of Engineers Cincinnati District by 1922 for work on the Ohio River
  • Transferred to US Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District in 1926
  • On 16 February 1926 while working at Dam 49 on th Ohio River at Uniontown Kentucky Chickamauga sank and was refloated with 72 hours
  • Retired from Army service in 1926
  • Sold in December 1927 to CAPT. James Howard of Howard Shipyard, Jeffersonville, IN. who rebuilt her into the pool-style towboat named Ed. J.Howard
  • She was chartered out on job contracts to USED and others
  • Final Disposition, sank in 1934 at the marine ways at Jeffersonville, IN, and was dismantled
