USED Towboat General Craighill

Sternwheel Towboat:
  • Built in 1911 at Howard Shipyard, Jeffersonville, IN. for US Army Corp of Engineers
  • Launched in 1911
  • Delivered in 1912
  • Christened, commissioned and placed in service in 1912 by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers as USED Towboat General Craighill
  • Assigned to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Wheeling District
  • 6 December 1914 General Craighill sunk at Dam 28 on the Ohio River and was raised soon after
  • Reassigned, date unknown, to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Louisville District
  • General Craighill worked on the Ohio River
  • Retired from US Army service in 1939
  • Sold in June 1939 to CAPT. Charles Stone of Point Pleasant, WV., renamed Bessie E. Merrill
  • Final Disposition, In 1943 she was sold to the French government and was delivered to Slidell, LA and dismantled. She was crated, etc. and consigned to the Congo River although there is some doubt if she ever got there
