General Visit Notes
This was my 1st visit to the Stewart/Cavalla in many years. My 1st reaction upon seening Stewart was Oh No !!!.... Years of neglect have taken their toll on the Stewart. Everywhere you look is rust, rust and more rust. Her paint is faded and she just looks bad. Stewart is one of only 2 Destroyer Escorts left in the United States and the only remaining Edsall Class escort in the world. She is not beyond hope but serious attention is needed quickly if she is to be saved. Since 1998 the Cavalla Historical Foundation (CHF) has taken over day to day operation and maintaince of the Stewart and are despretly trying to reverse 20 years of neglict and vandalism. The CHF's 1st priority is the Cavalla and that is understandable, They are after all submariners but they also have taken on the Stewart and have begun working on her.
