USS Wasp (LHD-1)


CAPT. John C. Howard USN

Captain Colby Howard is a native of Norton, Virginia. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia and was commissioned an Ensign in July 1992.

At-Sea assignments include Combat Information Center Officer and Navigator in USS CAPE ST. GEORGE (CG 71), commissioning Engineer Officer in USS ROOSEVELT (DDG 80), Commanding Officer in USS MONSOON (PC 4), Commanding Officer in USS SALVOR (ARS 52), Commanding Officer in USS DEWEY (DDG 105), and Deputy Commodore and Commodore of Patrol Coastal Squadron ONE.

Shore-duty assignments include Navigation and Seamanship Instructor and Officer Programs Recruiting Officer with the Reserve Officer Training Corps Unit at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, J35 Future Operations Planner on the staff of the United States Pacific Command, Scenario Manager for ISAF and NATO Joint Staff training at the NATO Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger, Norway, and Branch Head for Mine Warfare (OPNAV N952) on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations.

Captain Howard earned a Master of Business Administration from Virginia Tech's Pamplin College of Business, and is a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College and the Norwegian National War College. He is a Joint Qualified Officer and holds a National Security subspecialty for Europe, Russia and Associated States.
