USS Bataan (LHD-5)



CAPT. William Bradley Busch, USN

Captain Bradley Busch graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1995 and reported to USS STOUT (DDG 55) as the communications officer in March 1996.

In 1997, he completed the nuclear training pipeline in Orlando, Fla., and Charleston, S.C., and reported aboard the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) and served as the reactor propulsion division officer. During this tour, he qualified as a nuclear engineer.

His first shore assignment was the operations officer and sailing instructor for the Command, Seamanship, and Navigation Training Squadron at the Naval Academy. While at the Naval Academy, he earned his Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University.

Captain Busch completed department head tours aboard the USS Hawes (FFG 53) as the combat systems officer and aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) as the Reactor Controls Assistant. During his tour aboard the Big E, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Following his two department head tours; Captain Busch reported to Naval Reactors Headquarters as the executive assistant to the Deputy Director, Naval Reactors and as the speechwriter for the Director, Naval Reactors. His second shore assignment was a joint tour at the Office of the Secretary of Defense as an industrial analyst for shipbuilding in the Industrial Policy office for the Undersecretary of Defense, Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics.

Upon completion of his assignment with the Secretary of Defense, Captain Busch started the executive officer and commanding officer training pipeline. In June 2011, he assumed the duties as the executive officer of the USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98). During his assignment, the ship executed two three month shipyard availabilities, completed the Basic Phase of training, and prepared for an independent deployment to the Sixth Fleet Area of Responsibility. He also led the Forrest Sherman through a successful completion of the Flag Officer Sea Training, Exercise Joint Warrior, and the 2012 deployment. In July 2012, Captain Busch assumed command of the Forrest Sherman and led the ship through eight months of operations in the Sixth Fleet Area of Responsibility.

In June 2014, Captain Busch reported to USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) as the Reactor Officer. Following completion of a 24 month shipyard availability and compressed training phase, he deployed to the Sixth Fleet Arear of Responsibility.

Prior to assuming command of the USS Bataan (LHD 5) in November 2017, Capt. Busch was the assistant chief of staff for Manpower and Personnel, Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic.
