Commanding Officer, USS Bataan (LHD 5)

CAPT Murphy is a native of West Deptford, NJ. He graduated from Rutgers in 1998 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and in 2007 earned his MBA from Naval Post Graduate School. He graduated OCS in 1999 and was designated a Naval Aviator in 2000.

Following SH-60B training, he reported to the Saberhawks of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR SEVEN (HSL-47) in North Island, CA in 2001. There he deployed with Detachment THREE in USS FIFE (DD 991) and with Detachment TWO as the Maintenance Officer in USS SHOUP (DDG 86).

In 2004, he reported to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron ONE (VX-1) at Patuxent River, MD. He served as an Operational Test Director for the MH-60R/S, and as the Naval Tactics Techniques Procedures Model Manager for the HSL/HSM community.

CAPT Murphy served his next tour as Assistant Air Operations, Hangar Deck and Flight Deck Officer in USS BATAAN (LHD-5), in Norfolk, VA. Subsequently, he attended the US Army Command and Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS.

In 2010, he reported for his Department Head tour with the “Easyriders” of HSL-37 in Kaneohe Bay, HI. He served as the Admin Officer, the Maintenance Officer and as the Officer in Charge of Detachment FIVE in USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73) supporting Operation NEW DAWN. Following this tour, he served as the Joint Warfare Analysis Center’s liaison to the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, DC.

CAPT Murphy’s next assignment was as the Executive and then Commanding Officer of the “Magicians” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron THIRTY FIVE (HSM-35) in North Island, CA. Under his leadership, the command won the Isbell Trophy, Golden Wrench, and their first Battle E Award in 2017.

Following command, CAPT Murphy reported as the Executive Assistant to the Director, Integrated Warfare (OPNAV N9I) in Washington, DC and was subsequently selected for major command.

In Oct 2020, CAPT Murphy assumed the title of Commanding Officer of USS BATAAN (LHD-5) after previously serving as the as the Executive Officer

CAPT Murphy’s personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (First Strike/Flight Award), Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), and Navy Achievement Medal (two awards).
