CAPT Gregory Scott Thoroman, USN
Commanding Officer

Captain Thoroman enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1988 from Tallahassee, Florida. He served as an Aviation Electronics Technician (AT) in E-2C and EP-3E aircraft and participated in Operations PROVIDE PROMISE and DENY FLIGHT as a Naval Aircrewman. He attended Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS) and was commissioned an Ensign and designated a Naval Aviator through the Naval Aviation Cadet (NAVCAD) Program in June 1995.

Previous sea duty assignments include his initial squadron tour with the “Easyriders” of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron, Light 37 (HSL-37) in NAS Barbers Point Hawaii where he deployed twice in USS CHOSIN (CG 65) to the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH; Flag Lieutenant for the Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group FIVE, USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) Strike Group deployed in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM; Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor (SWTI) and Training Officer assigned to the “Battlecats” of HSL-43 in NAS North Island, CA; and Detachment Officer in Charge (OIC) and Maintenance Officer with the “Warlords” of HSL-51 in Atsugi Japan where he made multiple Western Pacific deployments as part of the Forward Deployed Naval Force (FDNF) including Operation ENDURING FREEDOM - PHILIPPINES. He was the recipient of Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet leadership award for 2007 as well as peer-selected Squadron and Wing Officer of the Year.

CAPT Thoroman served as the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of HSL-37 “Easyriders” located in Marine Corp Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay from November 2010 to April 2013. During this tour, HSL-37 earned the Battle ‘E’, the CNO Safety ‘S’, Golden Wrench, and Golden Anchor awards. From June 2015- June 2016, CAPT Thoroman also commanded the “Seahawks” of HSM-41, the West Coast Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) and Model Manager for the MH-60R. In September 2018, CAPT Thoroman reported as Executive Officer of USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) before fleeting up to Commanding Officer in November 2019.

Ashore, CAPT Thoroman has served as an FRS Instructor Pilot with HSL-41; Financial Analyst in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Programming Division (OPNAV N80); Deputy Director for Investment (FMB-2), Assistant Director and Executive Assistant to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Budget/ Fiscal Management Division (FMBA), Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Financial Management and Comptroller). CAPT Thoroman also completed an assignment to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, J8 (Force Structure, Resources and Assessment) as a Branch Chief in the Program, Budget, and Analysis Division (PBAD).

CAPT Thoroman is a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a B.S. in Professional Aeronautics and the Mahan Associate Fellows Program at US Naval War College with a M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies. CAPT Thoroman has logged over 3,400 flight hours in naval aircraft and is authorized to wear the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4), Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal (5), Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal (2) and the Navy Good Conduct Medal.
