USS Ponce (LPD-15)



CAPT. Dale W. Maxey USN

Dale W. Maxey enlisted in the Navy in 1982 as a Data Systems Technician. He attended initial class “A” and “C” schools in Mare Island, California before being assigned to the Operations Department of Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy as a computer maintenance technician. During a subsequent tour at CTF-67 in Naples, Italy, he was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program and graduated from the University of Illinois in December 1991.

Over his thirty years of Naval Service, Captain Maxey has had operational tours in USS BELKNAP (CG 26), USS STOUT (DDG 55), USS DONALD COOK (DDG 75), USS LEYTE GULF (CG 55), USS TAYLOR (FFG 55) and command of the USS KAUFFMAN (FFG 59). During these operational assignments, he has deployed eight times to the Arabian Gulf, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and South American waters.

Dale’s duties ashore have included a tour at the AEGIS TRAINING AND READINESS COMMAND (ATRC) Dahlgren as the Perspective Commanding Officer Course Supervisor and technical instructor, duties as Training Innovations Officer for COMMANDER SURFACE FORCES ATLANTIC (CNSL) and a tour as the Chief Staff Officer and Operational Support Officer at the DESTROYER CLASS SQUADRON (DDGRON) in Norfolk, Virginia and Reserve Manpower/Plans officer for COMMANDER NAVAL EXPEDITIONARY COMBAT COMMAND (NECC). He recently completed a tour as Reserve Manpower/Plans officer for The Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) Millington. He is currently the Commanding Officer of USS PONCE (AFSB(I)-15). Captain Maxey holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Illinois, a Masters of Arts in Military Studies from American Military University, and a Masters of Arts in National Security Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

His personal decorations include four Meritorious Service Medals, seven Navy Commendation Medals, the Joint Achievement Medal, four Navy Achievement Medals, two good conduct medals and various unit and campaign ribbons. Dale has been married for twenty three years to the former, Sheila Renae Henne of Iuka, Illinois and has two children. His son, Christopher is 8 and daughter, Eryn, is 7. The Maxey family currently resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
