CAPT. Joseph Patrick Thompson III, USN
Commanding Officer

CAPT J. Patrick Thompson III is a native of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1997 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Naval Architecture. CAPT Thompson also holds two Master’s Degrees in Systems Analysis and National Security/Strategic Studies.

Upon the completion of flight training in Pensacola in 1999, CAPT Thompson completed operational assignments as a Naval Aviator at HS-4 as a division officer, HCS-4 (renamed to HSC-84) and HS-14 as a department head, and Executive Officer and then Commanding Officer of HSC-85 from 2014-2015. Throughout these tours, CAPT Thompson has deployed ten times, supporting numerous named operations around the world.

CAPT Thompson’s shore tours include instructor pilot at HSC-3 and a staff officer tour at U.S. Special Operations Command in the Policy, Plans, and Strategy Directorate.

CAPT Thompson has logged over 3000 flight hours in various H-60 aircraft. His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (one “V” for valor and seven Strike/Flight), Navy Commendation Medal (three awards and one “V” for valor), Navy Achievement Medal, and various campaign and unit level awards.

CAPT Thompson assumed the duties of Executive Officer of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) in May of 2018.
