USS San Diego (LPD-22)


CAPT. William R. Grotewold

Captain William R. Grotewold graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1990 with a degree in Engineering Science and subsequently received his commission.

ENS Grotewold served aboard USS MOUNT VERNON as Weapons Officer, Main Propulsion Assistant, and Navigator. While assigned to MOUNT VERNON, he participated in Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm, and Operation Sea Angel. He next served aboard USS TEMPEST (PC 2) as Executive Officer and Operations Officer. TEMPEST supported Operation Support Democracy, conducting reconnaissance, surveillance, and maritime interdiction off the coast of Haiti. His next sea tour was as Operations Officer aboard USS HARPERS FERRY (LSD 49). He oversaw the installation, testing, and certification of the Rolling Airframe Missile and Ship Self Defense System on HARPERS FERRY. Following his tour on HARPERS FERRY, he served as Operations Officer (N3) for Amphibious Squadron FIVE. While embarked in USS TARAWA (LHA 1), PHIBRON FIVE supported Operation Determined Response recovery of USS COLE (DDG 67) from Aden, Yemen. LCDR Grotewold commanded USS CORMORANT (MHC 57) for two years. He served in Iraq as the Senior Coalition Advisor to the Iraqi Regional Support Unit Commander at An Numaniyah Military Training Base. He headed a small Coalition contingent on a large Iraqi Forward Operating Base. His first command tour was USS RUSHMORE (LSD 47) for twenty two months, including a highly successful seven month WESTPAC.

His first shore tour was as a Junior Officer Detailer at the Bureau of Naval Personnel. During his second shore tour, he served in N80 on the OPNAV staff. He was the “ Bullpen ” budget analyst for Expeditionary Warfare and Combat Logistics Forces. He next served ashore at Surface Warfare Officer School as the Diesel Engineering Lead. Upon his return from Iraq, he attended the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA. He received his Masters Degree in Strategic Studies. Captain Grotewold ’ s previous assignment was as Sea Basing Branch Head (OPNAV N81M).

His personal decorations include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards), and the Navy Achievement Medal (three awards).
