USS Rushmore (LSD-47)



CDR. Sarah H. DeGroot, USN
Commander Sarah De Groot is a native Long Beach, California. She received her commission, Third Mate commercial license, as well as Bachelor of Science degrees in Marine Biology and Marine Transportation in 1998 from Texas A&M, Galveston Maritime Academy. She has a Master of Science degree in Information Technology and attended the Naval War College where she received a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
Commander De Groot served onboard the USS PEARL HARBOR (LSD 52) as the First Division Officer and the Electrical Officer. She also served onboard USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64) as the Combat Systems Maintenance Officer supporting the initial phase of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. Her first department head tour was onboard USS RUSHMORE (LSD 47) as the 1st Lieutenant. Her second department head tour was as the Force Protect Officer and Exercise Plans at Destroyer Squadron FIFTY where she was responsible for protecting Iraqi Oil Infrastructure and planning exercises with Iraq, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
Her shore duty included tours at Operational Test and Evaluation Force as a C4I Systems Liaison Officer and as the Flag Secretary for Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic. During her most recent shore tour, she was serving as the Director of Combat Systems and Tactics Training as well as Lead Tactical Action Officer Mentor at Afloat Training Group San Diego.
Commander De Groot’s awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards) and the Meritorious Service Medal.
