PC-461 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down 20 October 1942 by the Leathem D. Smith Shipbuilding Co., Sturgeon Bay, WI
  • Launched 16 January 1943
  • Commissioned USS PC-1260, 24 April 1943
  • Arrived Pearl Harbor, HI 16 July 1944
  • Damaged in a collision with Kenmore (AK-221), 12 November 1944
  • Reclassified as a Control Submarine Chaser, PCC-1260, 20 August 1945
  • Decommissioned 12 April 1946 and laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group, Astoria, OR
    Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 lists plan for decommissioning and placing in reserve as January 1947
  • Named Durango 15 February 1956
  • Struck from the Navy Register in 1959
  • Fate unknown.

  • Length 173' 8"
  • Beam 23'
  • Draft 10' 10"
  • Speed 20 kts.
  • Complement 65
  • Armament: One 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount (replaced by Mk 15 Hedgehogs), one 40mm gun mount, three 20mm guns, two rocket launchers, four depth charge projectors, and two depth charge tracks
  • Propulsion: Two 1,440bhp Fairbanks Morse 38D8 1/8 diesel engines, Westinghouse single reduction gear, two shafts.

    Marginally afloat, being held in place by steel pilings set through the hull. Its on the Columbia River at Fairview, [Oregon] just a few miles upriver from Portland International Airport. The identification was made from the raised weld number outlines (reading: "PC 1260") on the stern
