Emporia served both the U. S. Navy and Coast Guard


Tacoma Class Patrol Frigate:

  • (MC Type T. S2-S2-AQ1). Originally authorized as Patrol Gunboat PG-136
  • Reclassified as a Patrol Frigate, PF-28, 15 April 1943
  • Laid down 14 July 1943 under a Maritime Commission contract by the Walter Butler Shipbuilding Co., Superior, Wisconsin
  • Launched 30 August 1943
  • Commissioned USS Emporia (PF-28), 12 June 1944
  • Decommissioned 14 March 1946 at New Orleans, LA and turned over to the Coast Guard and commissioned USCGC Emporia (PF 28) the same day
  • Decommissioned 28 August 1946 and returned to U.S. Navy custody
  • Sold to France 26 March 1947 as the Weather Ship Le Verrier
  • Scrapped in 1958.

  • Beam 37' 6"
  • Draft 13' 8"
  • Speed 20.3 kts.
  • Complement 214
  • Armament: Three 3"/50 dual purpose gun mounts, two twin 40mm gun mounts, nine 20mm guns, eight Y-gun depth charge projectors and two depth charge tracks
  • Propulsion: Two 3-drum express boilers, two 5,500 iHP vertical triple expansion Diamond Iron Works engines, two shafts.
