Independence 108k 3 December 2008: Mobile, Ala. - Mayor Samuel Jones administers the oath of enlistment to Electronics Technician 1st Class Timothy Reul, assigned to the littoral combat ship pre-commissioning unit Independence (LCS 2), during a Navy League of the United States holiday dinner at the Battleship Park Museum in Mobile. Jones, who served in the Navy for nine years, participated in the ceremony attended by the Independence blue and gold crews.

Independence was in Newport, R.I. supporting the International Seapower Symposium at the U.S. Naval War College. First held in 1969, the symposium has become the largest gathering of the world's maritime leaders and provides a forum to discuss common challenges and promote international maritime security cooperation.

Independence 159k 03 April 2012: Jacksonville, Fla. - Mineman 1st Class Burel Jones, from Boston, assigned to Mine Countermeasures Squadron, Detachment 1, embarked aboard the littoral combat ship UIndependence, and Aerographer's Mate 2nd Class Joshua Washington, from El Paso, Texas, stationed aboard Independence, hammer nails into the roof of a Habitat for Humanity project house. Seven Sailors from Independence volunteered with Habitat for Humanity as part of a community service project to help build houses in the local community.

Independence 168k 11 April 2012: the Caribbean Sea - Lt. Julio Alarcon, main propulsion assistant aboard the littoral combat ship Independence, uses the engineering control system to transfer fuel between holding tanks in the engineering log room aboard the ship. The engineering control system is a fully automated system that allows the operator to run any system, or start and stop any piece of machinery linked to the system with the push of a button. Independence is underway for the ship's maiden voyage to San Diego.

Independence 129k 11 April 2012: the Caribbean Sea - Electronics Technician 1st Class Travis Hill, from Monessen, Penn., assigned to the combat systems department aboard Independence, performs a fuel contamination test, normally conducted by sailors in an engineering rate. Due to the small size of the engineering department aboard Independence,Independence sailors from other departments and rating specialties obtain qualifications to support evolutions such as fuel contamination tests. Independence is underway for the ship's maiden voyage to San Diego.
