SS Orizaba


Cargo Ship:
  • Built in 1883 by Harlan and Hollingsworth, Wilmington, DE. for D. F. Sullivan
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Completed in May 1883, named Kate Caroll
  • Renamed Willamette Valley in 1887
  • Renamed Orizaba in 1896
  • Chartered from the Pacific Coast Steamship Co, by the US Army in 1900 to lay cables at Unalakik - St Michael - Safety Island, Cape Nome, Alaska
  • Final Disposition, lost near St Michael on 17 September 1900. Orizaba departed St. Michael that day bound For Safety Harbor with 8 passengers and 46 crewrnen aboard. Orizaba was engaged in laying cable For the U.S. governrnent and was carrying 285 tons of submarine cable worth $95,000. All passengers and crew rnade it to safety, but Orizaba, valued at $75,000 was a total loss. The cargo was salvaged. The reef where the tragedy occurred now bears the name Orizaba.
