USED Oriole

Sternwheel Towboat / Snagboat / Dredge:

Built in 1908 at Aitkin, MN.

Launched in 1908

Purchased by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1910, at Libby MN.

Delivered, christened, commissioned and put into service by the US Army Corps of Engineers as the towboat USED Oriole in 1910

Assigned to the US Army Corps of Engineers District, unknown

Oriole worked the Mississippi River and Big Sandy Lake

Converted to a snagboat in 1914

Converted to a bucket dredge in 1916 (dimensions changed to 107’ x 22'3" x 5’)

Retired from Army service in 1918

Sold in 1918 to George Matoon, Big Sandy Lake, less machinery, for use as a summer hotel until 1941

Final Disposition, pilot house is now in visitors center of the Big Sandy Lock house
