(November 16th, 1997) On board the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73). . . .As seen from the aft of the USS George Washington the ticonderoga class Cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) underway in the Suez Canal. Following a Presidential order to head for the Arabian Gulf region, elements of the George Washington battle group led by the carrier immediately left their regularly scheduled station in the Mediterranean and began the 7 day passage to the Gulf, which starts with a Suez Canal transit. George Washington will join the USS Nimitz battle group already on station. Both will enforce UN sanctions against Iraq by patrolling the "No-Fly Zone" under Operation Southern Watch.

The Ticonderoga class cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) underway in the Arabian Sea while heading for the Persian Gulf on 19 NOV 1997. Normandy is part of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) battle group. Normandy is armed with a number of defensive and offensive weapons that include Tomahawk cruise missiles. Following a Presidential order to head for the Persian Gulf region, elements of the George Washington battle group led by the carrier left their regularly scheduled station in the Mediterranean and began a 7 day passage to the Gulf. George Washington will join the USS Nimitz battle group already on station. Both will enforce UN sanctions against Iraq by patrolling the "No-Fly Zone" under Operation Southern Watch.

USS Normandy is on a regularly scheduled deployment in support of operation Enduring Freedom.

Mahan transferred over duties to Normandy as the acting flagship for the Commanding Officer of Standing NATO Maritime Group One Rear Adm. Michael K. Mahon.

Victoria, Seychelles, 17 September 007, Guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) and guided-missile destroyer USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) are moored together during a port visit to Seychelles. Normandy is transferring duties as flagship to Bainbridge for commander Standing NATO Maritime Group (SNMG) 1, Rear Admiral Michael K. Mahon. SNMG1 is one of four joint NATO maritime task forces.

Bainbridge recently relieved Normandy as flagship for Rear Adm. Michael K. Mahon, commander of Standing NATO Maritime Group 1.
