CVL-30 and CG-56 were named for the Battle of the San Jacinto River, fought on April 21, 1836 the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. Led by General Sam Houston, the outnumbered Texas Army engaged and defeated Mexican forces led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna in a fight that lasted just 18 minutes, in present-day Harris County, Texas.

Feb. 24, 1996 -- The U.S. Navy’s Ticonderoga Class Cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56) executes a high-speed turn following replenishment at sea (RAS) operations with the Military Sealift Command Replenishment Oiler USNS Big Horn (T-AO 198) in the Central Mediterranean, February 24, 1996. USS San Jacinto is part of the battle group assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73).

Mar. 16, 1996 -- The U.S. Navy Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56) makes her way southward through the Suez Canal, March 16, 1996. The San Jacinto is accompanying the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) to the Arabian Gulf, where they will support UN sanctions against Iraq, under Operation Southern Watch.
