NORTHEN ARABIAN GULF, 3 September 1996 - A first strike tomahawk missile is fired from the forward vertical launch system (VLS) aboard the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67). Following Saddam Hussein’s offensive action into Kurdish territory within the UN sponsored “no-fly zone”, U.S. Naval forces launched 14 Tomahawk Cruise missiles on targets in southern Iraq. President Bill Clinton authorized repeated action less than 24 hours later, after DOD officials determined that additional missiles were needed to ensure that targets were completely neutralized.

24 September 2002 - The guided missile cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67) is underway as part of the USS Abraham Lincoln Battle Group. Navy guided missile cruisers perform primarily in a Battle Force role. These ships are multi-mission (AAW, ASW, ASUW) surface combatants capable of supporting carrier battle groups, amphibious forces, or of operating independently and as flagships of surface action groups. The cruisers are equipped with Tomahawk giving them additional long range strike mission capability. The Lincoln Battle Group deployed conducting combat missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
