Lazzaretti meets his two month-old son for the first time after his ship, USS Crommelin returned home from a six-month deployment in the Naval Forces Southern Command area of responsibility. Crommelin is one of two Oliver Hazard Perry class guided missile frigates based in Pearl Harbor. Commissioned in June 1983, Crommelin was originally homeported in Long Beach, Calif. In September 1991 the ship shifted homeports to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The ship is named after the Crommelin brothers who were distinguished Naval Aviators during World War II. The Ney award-winning Culinary Specialists assigned to the ship invited Chef Yamaguchi to come aboard and share his thoughts on food preparation and cooking. Yamaguchi is often regarded as a culinary pioneer because of his fusion of European and Pacific styles of cooking. He operates 31 "Roy's" restaurants scattered throughout the United States, Japan and Guam. Naval forces from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and observers from Mexico and Canada are participating in UNITAS 45-04, the premier naval exercise in the region, which is conducted under the direction of Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and hosted this year by the Peruvian Navy. 339k 24 September 2004: The Eastern Pacific Ocean - Sailors assigned to the guided missile frigate Crommelin stack 525 bales of cocaine seized this week during an interdiction in the Eastern Pacific. Crommelin, working with U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) 105, and embarked Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light Three Seven (HSL-37), conducted what turns out to be the third largest drug interdiction in history, totaling 25,000 pounds of narcotics.
