513k 10 February 2007: Port Gentil, Gabon - Operation Specialist Seaman Travon Cuffee a member of the guided-missile frigate USS Kaufman (FFG 59) basketball team, puts up a shot against a local Gabonese team. Cuffee sank a fifty-foot goal at the buzzer for an apparent game winning 3-pointer, but it was determined the basket came after time had expired handing the home team the victory. The friendship-building event was part of Kauffman's port visit. A task group comprised of USS Kauffman, U.S. Coast Guard Cutter USCG Legare (WMEC 912), and elements of the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa staff, is currently deployed to the Gulf of Guinea to strengthen Regional Maritime Partnerships.

160k 09 March 2007: So Tom And Prncipe - Gas Turbine System Technician (Electrical) 1st Class Lon Ross, an engineer aboard guided missile frigate Kauffman, and a So Tom and Prncipe coast guardsman work together to fix an inoperative motor on a host nation Boston Whaler. The impromptu maintenance was part of a small boat training exercise designed to help So Tom and Prncipe forces build core competencies. Ross not only helped fix the motor, but the repair also taught the host nation forces how to maintain the vital equipment. Kauffman is conducting a four-day port visit to the African island nation of So Tom and Prncipe to strengthen maritime partnerships in the Gulf of Guinea.

The ceremony marks the official turnover of a $500,000 hospital renovation paid with humanitarian assistance funds from the United States European Command. A native of Columbus, Ind., Eckhart was waiting at fleet landing to return to guided missile frigate Kauffman when he was approached by the local sailor and asked what kind of music American Sailors listen to. Rather than tell him, Eckhart shared the iPod with his new shipmate so he could listen along. Currently deployed to the Gulf of Guinea, Kauffman conducted a four-day port visit to the African island nation of So Tom and Prncipe to strengthen maritime partnerships.

The game was part of a two-day UNITAS Gold sports challenge event. Naval units from the U.S. are joined by maritime forces from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay for the 50th iteration of the longest running multinational maritime exercise in the world. The forces are participating in several realistic tactical training scenarios off the coast of Florida April 20-May 5.
