"Eyes of the navy. Much like a prehistoric monster the U.S. airplane carrier Lexington at anchor with its flotilla of airplanes in the harbor of Panama.
(Wide World Photo)"

Dated April 20, 1931. Note inscription by "E.L. Beckwith, Navy Mail Clerk, USS Lexington," a familiar name to cancel collectors—Mr. Beckwith was a great supporter of collectors of naval postmarks.

Cancel Type 6 [Info]

Note, near the lower right corner, examples of the two stamps issued for the International Civil Aeronautics Conference held in Washington, D.C., 12–14 December 1928. The red stamp (2 cents) shows the aircraft used by the Wright brothers in the first successful flight of a heavier-than-air, powered aircraft, and commemorates the 25th anniversay of their flight. The blue stamp (5 cents) shows a Ryan B-5 Brougham airplane (similar to Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis) with an outline of the globe in the background.
