SS Cape Chalmers (AK-5036)


Cape C Class Breakbulk Cargo Ship:
  • Laid down in 1961 as SS Adabelle Lykes a Maritime Administration type (C3-S-37c) hull under Maritime Administration contract (MA 115) at Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point, Baltimore, MD.
  • Launched in late 1962
  • Delivered to the Maritime Administration in 1963 for operation by Lykes Bros. SS Co.
  • Reacquired by the Maritime Administration (MARAD) in 1984 and laid up in reserve as part of the MARAD National Defense Reserve Fleet, renamed SS Cape Chalmers
  • SS Cape Chalmers was assigned to the Military Sealift Command (MSC) Ready Reserve Force (RRF) as AK-5036
  • When activated SS Cape Chalmers (AK-5036) was assigned to the Military Sealift Command (MSC) as one of the Military Sealift Command's Modular Cargo Delivery System Ready Reserve Force (RRF) Ships
  • Downgraded to the MARAD National Defense Reserve Fleet from the RRF, 1 October 2001
