Most Net Tenders received the below alterations during their service. This image of Bitterbush (AN-39) depicts a typical Net Tender prior to alteration.

1. The high mast and boom was removed from the after deck.
2. The high round gun mount opposite and above the stack was removed.
3. A new gun deck was constructed on the after deck, level with and the same width as the boat deck, which also served as a canopy over part of the after deck.
