Adams Class Screw Steamer:
  • Built in 1875-76 as the wooden-hulled screw steamer Essex by the United States and Donald Mackay, at East Boston, MA.
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Commissioned, USS Essex, 3 October 1876, at Boston Navy Yard, Boston, MA., CDR. W. S. Schley in command
  • Assignments included;
    North Atlantic Squadron - 1876 - cruised the west coast of Africa
    South Atlantic Squadron - 1878
    Pacific Station - November 1881 to December 1882
    Asiatic Station - 1882
  • Decommissioned, in May 1889, at New York, N.Y.
  • Placed in service as a training ship from 1893 to 1903
  • Assigned to the Ohio Naval Militia to train Naval Reservist from 1904 to 1916
  • Reassigned to the Ninth Naval District from 1917 to 1926 to train Naval Reserve personnel
  • Designated Miscellaneous Unclassified (IX-10), 17 July 1920
  • Essex (IX-10) was assigned to the Minnesota Naval Militia from August 1927 to 27 October 1930 to train Naval Reserve personnel
  • Struck from the Naval Register, 27 October 1930
  • Final Disposition, sold 23 December 1930 to Klatzky Iron and Metal Company for $400. Partially dismantled and towed out into Lake Superior, 13 October 1931, and set afire on 14 October 1931
