USS Forest Rose

Awards, Citations and Campaign Ribbons

Civil War Medal

Stern-wheel Steamer (Tinclad #9):
  • Built in 1862 at Pittsburgh, PA.
  • Purchased by the Navy, 15 November 1862
  • Commissioned USS Forest Rose, 3 December 1862, Acting Master George W. Brown in command
*(Acting Master George W. Brown was placed under “close arrest” on 18 Feb 1863 for unspecified charges not listed in the correspondence, but cleared by his superiors and returned to command of Forest Rose. He was a flat bottom pilot prior to the war and it was indicated he was unsuited for command of a steamer. Apparently the charges were unfounded. He went on to command other Navy vessels during the Civil War and promoted to Acting Volunteer Lieutenant.)

  • General patrol and dispatch duties on the Mississippi River and tributaries

  • Yazoo Pass Expedition in February 1863
  • Red River Expedition, 5 to 15 May 1864
  • Decommissioned, 7 August 1865, at Mound City, IL.
  • Final Disposition, sold, 17 August 1865,
