Wooden Sternwheel Steamer (Tinclad #53):
  • Built in 1863 at Freedom, PA. as the steamer Princess
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Purchased for the Navy by ADM. D.D. Porter, 3 March 1864, from F. Maratta and others for $32,400
  • Commissioned USS Naiad prior to 3 April 1864, location unknown
  • During the Civil War USS Naiad was assigned to the Mississippi Squadron
    Assigned to patrol along the Mississippi and its tributaries against Confederate cavalry and guerilla raids
    Decommissioned, 30 June 1865, at Cairo, IL.
  • Sold at auction at Mound City, IL.,17 August 1865, to B.F. Beasley et al, for $8,400
  • Final Disposition, fatally snagged one mile above Fire Creek, above Napoleon. MO, on the Missouri River, 1 June 1868
