Ouachita 221k Pilot Alfred Marshall, U.S. Navy. Photographed during the Civil War by Hord & Harmon, Post Office Building, Dayton, OH. His uniform includes shoulder straps bearing a six-spoke steering wheel insignia. The river pilots became crucial during the Union blockade of the South during the Civil War. USS Ouachita operated in the Mississippi and its tributaries. Rivers had an ever changing face of sand bars, shoals, and man made obstacles which included everything from sunken boats to chains across the river requiring the services of a pilot to navigate the waterways.
Includes US Naval History and Heritage Command photo # NH 100001.
